Where it came from
Clone Legion was introduced in the Commander 2017 set, specifically within the Draconic Domination deck. The set was designed to focus on tribal synergies, with this particular blue sorcery card intended to provide a high-impact, late-game board presence for players utilizing the blue color identity. It occupies a space in the game's design history as a 'splashy' rare, intended to reward players for reaching the high mana cost required to cast it in a multiplayer Commander environment.
The artwork for this card was created by illustrator Deruchenko Alexander. In designing the visual representation of the spell, the artist aimed to convey the overwhelming nature of the ability, which creates a copy of every creature on the battlefield. Upon its release, the card was widely noted by the Magic: The Gathering community for its potential to turn the tide of a game instantly, cementing its status as a staple in casual, high-mana Commander decks that favor cloning and token-based strategies.
