Provenance

Where it came from

Cloud Cover was released in the 2001 Magic: The Gathering expansion set Planeshift. As the second set in the Invasion block, Planeshift focused on the multi-colored mechanics and narrative themes established in the storyline where the plane of Rath began to overlay with Dominaria. The card was designed to offer players a unique defensive utility, playing into the set's broader emphasis on strategic interaction and the return of popular mechanics like kicker.

The card’s atmospheric illustration was created by artist Heather Hudson, whose work frequently defined the aesthetic of the early 2000s sets. Her depiction of the spell captures the ethereal and protective nature of the enchantment, aligning with the card's mechanical ability to protect permanents by returning them to a player's hand. Upon release, it was regarded as a niche but flavorful enchantment, characteristic of the utility-focused blue spells common in the era’s design philosophy.
