Where it came from
Cloud, Ex-SOLDIER, numbered 221 in the Final Fantasy Commander card set, serves as a quintessential representation of the iconic protagonist from Final Fantasy VII. The card was developed to bring the tactical depth of the Final Fantasy universe into a tabletop format, reflecting the character's legacy as a weary mercenary turned reluctant hero. Its inclusion in the set highlights the enduring appeal of the 1997 original game and its subsequent remakes, catering to fans who appreciate the character's signature Buster Sword and intricate backstory.
The visual design of the card emphasizes Cloud's stark, stoic aesthetic, utilizing character art that captures his definitive look from the compilation of Final Fantasy VII projects. Designers aimed to balance his powerful combat stats with card mechanics that evoke his unpredictable yet focused nature in battle. Upon its release, the card was widely received by the community as a nostalgic centerpiece for players, often praised for its fidelity to the source material and its ability to anchor a deck built around SOLDIER-themed synergies.
