Coalstoke Gearhulk // Coalstoke Gearhulk

Coalstoke Gearhulk is an entry in the Aetherdrift Art Series, a collection showcasing the detailed illustration work commissioned for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This specific piece represents the mechanical aesthetic of the Kaladesh setting, a plane defined by its reliance on aether-based technology and elaborate steampunk-inspired inventions. These art cards were distributed as promotional items in set boosters, intended to highlight the intricate visual storytelling provided by Wizards of the Coast’s roster of concept artists.

The design of the Gearhulk series centers on the concept of 'constructs,' powerful machines designed to serve various functions within the city of Ghirapur. By isolating the art from the typical gameplay text, this series allows for a focused appreciation of the color palette and structural design choices made by the illustrator. These cards are widely regarded by collectors as high-quality prints that serve as a testament to the collaborative process between art directors and digital illustrators in the modern trading card industry.
