Provenance

Where it came from

The Cockatrice card originates from the International Collectors' Edition, a limited-print set released by Wizards of the Coast in 1993. This set was designed as an exhibition product, intended to introduce international markets to the game and showcase the complete range of cards from the Alpha and Beta core sets. To prevent these cards from being used in official tournament play, they were printed with gold-bordered backs and square corners, distinguishing them clearly from the standard legal sets.

The art for the Cockatrice was originally created by Quinton Hoover for the game’s first edition. Hoover was a prominent early contributor whose whimsical, stylized illustrations helped define the fantasy aesthetic of early Magic: The Gathering. While the card itself functions as a classic green creature with deathtouch-adjacent mechanics, its presence in the International Collectors' Edition is primarily noted by enthusiasts for its historical role in preserving the art and design legacy of the game's initial release during a period of rapid international expansion.
