Provenance

Where it came from

Codex Shredder was originally released as an uncommon artifact in the 2012 Magic: The Gathering set Return to Ravnica, designed to fit the mechanical themes of the Golgari Swarm. The card allowed players to mill cards into the graveyard or recur them to their hand, reflecting the guild's cycle of life and death. The original design sought to provide utility in limited formats while offering subtle graveyard interaction for constructed play.

This specific iteration, numbered 790, was released as part of a Secret Lair Drop series. These specialized, limited-run printings often feature unique illustrative styles intended to offer a stylistic departure from the standard set aesthetic. By re-imagining established functional cards with unconventional or boutique art, Wizards of the Coast provided collectors with premium visual alternatives that maintain the original card's mechanical utility.
