Codie, Ravenous Codex

Codie, Ravenous Codex was introduced in the Strixhaven: School of Mages set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game, released in 2021. The card represents a central, sentient artifact from the setting, designed as a manifestation of the collective knowledge within the Biblioplex, the infinite library at the heart of the Strixhaven campus. Mechanically, it was engineered to challenge players to build decks focused on non-permanent spells, leaning into the high-risk, high-reward theme of the set.

The artistic direction for Codie was helmed by illustrator Wisnu Tan, who envisioned the character as an ancient, towering stack of living tomes imbued with arcane energy. The design intent was to capture a sense of restless intelligence and chaotic power, distinguishing it from the more grounded artifacts typical of the game. Upon its release, it was well received by the player base for its unique design, which effectively balances its immense potential for explosive spellcasting with a restrictive constraint that forces creative deck-building.
