Where it came from
Codie, Vociferous Codex was released as part of the Strixhaven: School of Mages set in 2021, specifically appearing as a promotional card for the Magic: The Gathering expansion focused on the magical university of Strixhaven. Designed as a living, sentient library, the character embodies the academic and magical identity of the setting, serving as a unique mechanical artifact that rewards players for casting spells of varying mana costs.
The card was illustrated by Victor Adame Minguez, who sought to capture the character's whimsical yet scholarly presence through a vibrant, high-fantasy art style. Within the community, Codie is celebrated for its unconventional 'commander' capabilities, offering a distinct play experience that forces players to navigate strict deck-building constraints while emphasizing the chaotic nature of an sentient, spell-casting book.
