Command Beacon

Command Beacon was first introduced in the 2015 Commander expansion to address a specific logistical challenge in the multiplayer format. As the Commander game mode revolves entirely around a single legendary creature, players often found their momentum halted when their commander was removed multiple times, leading to prohibitively high 'commander tax' costs. This land was designed to provide a utility-based recovery mechanism, allowing players to bypass the tax entirely by putting the creature directly into their hand from the command zone.

Artist Jonas De Ro provided the visual identity for this reprint in the Commander Legends set, which was released in 2020 as the first booster-draftable expansion designed specifically for the Commander format. De Ro’s illustration emphasizes the beacon as a mystical, navigational landmark, grounding the card’s mechanical function as a source of guidance for lost heroes. The design was well-received by the player base for both its aesthetic clarity and its sustained role as an essential utility piece in most singleton deck-building strategies.
