Where it came from
Commence the Endgame was released as a promotional card for the 2019 Magic: The Gathering expansion, War of the Spark. The set served as the climactic conclusion to a multi-year narrative arc involving the villainous Nicol Bolas, and this specific card represents a pivotal moment in the conflict where the antagonist initiates his final plan to consume the souls of the plane of Ravnica.
The artwork was created by Johannes Voss, whose contributions to the game are noted for their ethereal lighting and emotive character depictions. Voss intended the illustration to capture the grand scale and inevitable dread of the storyline, utilizing dramatic color palettes to emphasize the magical cataclysm. Upon release, the card was well-received by players for its thematic resonance and its utility in control-focused deck archetypes.
