Where it came from
Commune with the Gods was released in 2013 as part of the Theros expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set was heavily inspired by Greek mythology, focusing on a world where the belief of mortals manifests into powerful deities. Mechanically, the card was designed to support graveyard-centric strategies by allowing players to dig through their library for a creature or enchantment, reinforcing the set's thematic emphasis on divine favor and mythic storytelling.
The card's evocative illustration was created by artist Lucas Graciano. Tasked with capturing the ritualistic nature of the Theros setting, Graciano depicted a supplicant reaching toward a celestial presence. The artwork is noted for its ethereal lighting and sense of scale, aiming to visually represent the thin veil between the mortal and divine realms. It was well-received by the player base for its utility in deck construction and its effective contribution to the set’s cohesive aesthetic.
