Where it came from
Complicate was released in 2002 as part of the Onslaught expansion for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. The set marked a thematic return to the plane of Otaria and focused heavily on the mechanics of cycling, which allowed players to discard cards to draw new ones, providing much-needed flexibility during matches. As an instant-speed counterspell that could be cycled for a low cost, Complicate was designed to offer blue-aligned players a versatile tool for controlling the pace of the game in both competitive and casual formats.
