Provenance

Where it came from

Conquering Manticore was released in 2010 as part of the Rise of the Eldrazi expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As the final set in the Zendikar block, it introduced the massive, reality-warping Eldrazi titans and emphasized a slower, more combat-focused play environment intended to support high-cost creatures. The design team sought to capture the theme of corruption and overwhelming power through mechanics that allowed players to seize control of the battlefield.

The card's artwork was commissioned from illustrator Chris Rahn, who rendered the creature with a focus on its unsettling, predatory anatomy and the aggressive stance typical of red-aligned combat cards. His depiction aimed to evoke the chaotic and monstrous nature of the Zendikar plane as it faced the Eldrazi invasion. Upon release, the card found a place in limited play formats, noted for its ability to shift the momentum of a game by temporarily turning an opponent's resources against them.
