Where it came from
Consuming Tide was released as part of the 2021 Magic: The Gathering set Innistrad: Crimson Vow. Designed as a blue rare sorcery, the card fits into the gothic horror aesthetic of the set, which focuses on the wedding of the vampire Olivia Voldaren and the eternal night falling upon the plane of Innistrad. Mechanically, it serves as a board-clearing effect, reflecting the thematic chaos of the tides and the encroaching supernatural darkness central to the set's narrative.
The card features illustration by Wisnu Tan, who captured the fluid, atmospheric nature of the watery surge. The design intent was to provide blue control decks with a way to reset the battlefield, rewarding players for having a higher density of nonland cards in their hand. Upon its release, it was well-received by players for its tactical utility in Commander and other casual formats, where its ability to balance the board state while refilling a player's hand offered a distinct strategic advantage.
