Where it came from
Contact Other Plane was released in 2022 as part of the Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate expansion. This set was designed to capture the flavor and mechanics of the Dungeons & Dragons Forgotten Realms setting, specifically focusing on the city of Baldur's Gate. The card depicts a classic D&D spell that allows a caster to communicate with extraplanar entities to gain knowledge, serving as a blue-aligned draw spell that reflects the unpredictable nature of divination in the game.
The artwork for this specific card was illustrated by Bryan Sola, who was tasked with visualizing the ethereal, slightly unsettling experience of reaching across dimensions. The design reflects the set's broader goal of merging Magic: The Gathering mechanics with tabletop roleplaying tropes. Upon its release, it was noted by players for its thematic resonance with D&D mechanics, fitting well into Commander decks that prioritize flavor and high-variance playstyles.
