Provenance

Where it came from

Contagion Engine was originally released in 2010 as part of the Scars of Mirrodin expansion for Magic: The Gathering. Designed as a centerpiece for the set's proliferating mechanics, the card depicts the relentless expansion of the Phyrexians, a metallic, biomechanical faction within the game's lore. It was crafted to function as both a board-clearing tool and a synergy engine for decks focused on counters, reflecting the set's emphasis on industrial growth and biological corruption.

The artwork was commissioned from the illustrator Daarken, who leaned into the dark, visceral aesthetic of the New Phyrexian aesthetic. The design purposefully evokes a sense of cold, methodical machinery, with the illustration capturing the engine's role in spreading blight across the plane of Mirrodin. Upon its release, it became a staple in Commander formats due to its ability to manipulate counters, cementing its place as an iconic artifact that has since been reprinted in The List, a curated selection of cards that Wizards of the Coast includes in various booster packs to maintain accessibility for older designs.
