Where it came from
Contagion Engine was introduced in the Scars of Mirrodin set in 2010, designed as a key artifact for the Phyrexian faction. It represents the encroaching corruption of the plane of Mirrodin, embodying the mechanical and biological synthesis that defines Phyrexian ideology. The card was crafted to support strategies centered on proliferate, a mechanic that allows players to increase the number of counters on permanents or players, reflecting the systematic spread of the Phyrexian oil.
The card’s visual design, executed by illustrator Steven Belledin, captures the terrifying industrial aesthetics of the Phyrexians through intricate, gear-heavy machinery bathed in a sinister, muted color palette. It was received as a versatile tool in both competitive and casual formats, particularly for commander decks that benefit from manipulating counters. Its inclusion in the Breaking News subset reflects its status as a landmark piece of design history within the game, highlighting the thematic depth of the Phyrexian narrative arc.
