Where it came from
Contamination first appeared in the 1998 Magic: The Gathering set Urza's Saga, designed as a powerful enchantment meant to represent the spread of Phyrexian corruption across the plane of Rath. The card's design goal was to provide a punishing mana-denial effect for black decks, effectively locking opponents out of producing colored mana other than black. Its stark, unsettling artwork by Ron Spencer captured the parasitic nature of the Phyrexians, solidifying its reputation as a potent and often frustrating tool for competitive players.
The version from Mystery Booster 2 serves as a specialized reprint, maintaining the original artistic vision while integrating the card into the unique play environment of the supplemental set. These boosters were designed to celebrate Magic's history by featuring a curated list of reprints with a distinct 'playtest' or archival aesthetic. By including Contamination, the set highlights the card's enduring legacy as one of the most iconic stax-style pieces in the game's long history of mechanical evolution.
