Convolute was released as part of The List, a curated selection of cards from Magic: The Gathering history that appear in Set Boosters. The card originally debuted in the Eldritch Moon expansion in 2016, which concluded the two-part Shadows over Innistrad block. Set within the gothic horror world of Innistrad, the set focused on the corruption of the plane by the Eldrazi titan Emrakul, and the card's mechanics reflect the theme of desperate, chaotic resistance against overwhelming cosmic forces.
