Where it came from
Cormela, Glamour Thief was released in 2022 as part of the Streets of New Capenna expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set draws heavy inspiration from 1920s Art Deco architecture and noir aesthetics, focusing on the urban sprawl of New Capenna, a city ruled by five warring demon-led families. Cormela represents the Maestros family, a guild of elite assassins who view their bloody work through the lens of high art.
The card illustration was created by artist Yongjae Choi, who focused on capturing the character's dual nature as both a sophisticated performer and a deadly operative. The visual design emphasizes the opulent, dark color palette and sharp geometric styling characteristic of the set's setting. Upon release, the card gained attention in commander-style play for its ability to generate mana and recur spells, positioning it as a distinct utility piece within the Grixis color identity.
