Where it came from
Cornered by Black Mages is a trading card featured in the initial Final Fantasy Trading Card Game releases, drawing inspiration from the iconic encounter designs found throughout the early entries of the long-running role-playing series. These cards were produced to provide fans with physical representations of memorable gameplay moments, specifically highlighting the threat posed by the Black Mage archetype, a recurring staple known for its devastating elemental magic.
The visual direction for these cards utilizes official concept art and character assets from Square Enix, aiming to translate the pixel-art aesthetic of the 8-bit and 16-bit eras into a modern, tactile medium. The design prioritizes clarity and thematic consistency, ensuring that the illustrations reflect the high-stakes tactical combat that defines the series. Upon its release, the set was received as a nostalgic expansion for enthusiasts of the franchise, serving as both a functional component of the competitive game and a collectible tribute to the history of Final Fantasy.
