Provenance

Where it came from

Court Hussar was originally released in the 2006 Magic: The Gathering expansion Guildpact, representing the Azorius Senate within the Ravnica block. It was designed as a blue creature that captures the theme of bureaucratic vigilance, utilizing a 'look at the top cards' mechanic that mirrors the flavor of a sentinel gathering information for the ruling legal guild.

The artwork was provided by Ron Spears, who rendered the soldier in full, ornate armor consistent with the high-fantasy, urban-law aesthetic of the set. The card was later included in 'The List,' a rotating selection of reprints from Magic's history that appear in Set Boosters, allowing players to rediscover older designs that remain mechanically relevant in various formats.
