Provenance

Where it came from

Court of Ambition was introduced in the 2020 Magic: The Gathering set Commander Legends, a release specifically designed to support the multiplayer Commander format. As part of a cycle of enchantments representing the various courts of the plane of Paliano, this card was created to provide recurring resource advantages while encouraging social table dynamics through its monarch mechanic. The monarch system, which grants a player card draw at their end step, was integrated here to incentivize aggressive play and table-wide interaction.

The card’s visual identity was brought to life by artist Volkan Baga, who utilized a regal and somber aesthetic to match the theme of a black-aligned court. Baga focused on dramatic lighting and architectural detail to convey a sense of nobility corrupted by greed and dark ambition. Upon its release, the card was widely received as a staple for black-heavy Commander decks, valued for its ability to drain opponents while simultaneously fueling the controller's hand through the monarch keyword.
