Crashing Footfalls

Crashing Footfalls was released in 2019 as part of the Modern Horizons expansion for Magic: The Gathering. This set was designed specifically to introduce new cards directly into the Modern format, bypassing Standard legality, and was intended to provide a high-power level environment that could cater to complex deck archetypes. The card represents a cycle of 'suspend' spells, a mechanic originally debuting in the Time Spiral block, designed to balance powerful late-game effects by forcing players to wait several turns before the spell resolves.

The card features artwork by artist Grzegorz Rutkowski, who utilized a dramatic, scale-oriented composition to convey the overwhelming nature of a colossal beast entering the battlefield. The design goal was to evoke the feeling of a catastrophic event, visually supporting the card's mechanical function of generating multiple 4/4 Rhino tokens. Upon release, it became a cornerstone for 'cascade' strategies, as players realized that cards which ignore mana costs allowed them to trigger the spell’s effect immediately, bypassing its intended time-delayed drawback.
