Provenance

Where it came from

Crippling Chill was released in May 2012 as part of the Avacyn Restored expansion for Magic: The Gathering. As the final set in the Innistrad block, it focused on the triumphant return of the archangel Avacyn to a world teetering on the brink of annihilation. The card was designed as a common-rarity utility spell, intended to provide blue decks with a budget-friendly method of tempo disruption by tapping down a creature and drawing a card, mirroring the high-stakes, gothic-horror atmosphere of the setting.

The card features illustration by Kev Walker, a longtime contributor to the game known for his expressive and moody aesthetic. Walker was tasked with depicting the magical manifestation of Innistrad’s oppressive, supernatural cold, using a stark color palette to emphasize the freezing sensation. Upon release, the card was well-received by limited-format players for its efficiency in stalling opposing threats, securing its place as a staple defensive option within the Avacyn Restored draft environment.
