Where it came from
Crossbow Infantry was originally printed in the Mercadian Masques expansion for Magic: The Gathering, released in 1999. The set was inspired by the plane of Mercadia, a world defined by its mercantile culture, goblin-run bureaucracy, and reliance on unconventional technology, which informed the card's depiction of a soldier utilizing mechanical weaponry.
The artwork was created by illustrator Greg Staples, who aimed to capture the gritty, industrial aesthetic prevalent in the Mercadian setting. Within the game's mechanics, the card serves as a staple example of white-aligned defensive infantry, reflecting a design philosophy of the late nineties that focused on simple, reactive combat abilities to stabilize the board.
