Cruel Reality was introduced in the 2017 Magic: The Gathering expansion set Amonkhet, a block heavily inspired by ancient Egyptian mythology and themes of life, death, and trial. Designed as a high-mana enchantment, the card reflects the set's narrative of the plane being ruled by the tyrannical dragon god Nicol Bolas, who forces the citizens through grueling trials to achieve a false sense of glorious afterlife.
The card’s striking illustration was crafted by artist Bastien L. Deharme.
