Crypt Ghast

Crypt Ghast was first printed in the Gatecrash set in 2013 and later featured as part of the Commander 2014 product line. As a card within the Commander 2014 Commander decks, specifically appearing in the black-aligned Sworn to Darkness deck, it was designed to support the multiplayer-focused format by providing both ramp through its extort ability and utility in mana acceleration. The card serves as a staple for black decks, functioning as a thematic bridge between the gothic horror aesthetic of the Orzhov Syndicate and the broader mechanical needs of the Commander format.

The card’s illustration was created by Seb McKinnon, an artist noted for his surreal, atmospheric, and often haunting style. McKinnon’s design for the Crypt Ghast leans into the eerie, shadowy nature of black mana, utilizing a desaturated palette and ethereal forms to capture the essence of a spirit lingering between life and death. The card was well-received by players for its synergy with swamp-heavy mana bases and its flavorful integration of the extort keyword, cementing its status as an enduring choice for casual and competitive Commander players alike.
