Where it came from
The Cryptic Coat was released as a promotional card for the Magic: The Gathering set Murders at Karlov Manor, which debuted in early 2024. The set draws heavy inspiration from classic noir and murder mystery tropes, placing players within a high-stakes investigation on the plane of Ravnica. This specific card serves as an artifact equipment, designed to embody the quintessential detective’s attire while offering unique gameplay mechanics centered around the set's signature 'disguise' and 'cloak' themes.
The visual identity of the Cryptic Coat was crafted to reflect the gloomy, rain-slicked aesthetic of the Ravnican underworld. By utilizing a distinct promo frame treatment, the illustration highlights the mysterious nature of the garment, favoring a moody color palette that emphasizes shadow and intrigue. It was received by the player community as a flavorful utility card, lauded for its thematic synergy with the set's hidden-information mechanics and its evocative nod to hardboiled detective fiction.
