Cunning Sparkmage

Cunning Sparkmage was released in February 2010 as part of the Worldwake expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed as a thematic expansion of the 'Zendikar' block, which focused heavily on land-based mechanics and adventurous, high-stakes exploration. It was intended to function as an efficient utility creature for red decks, providing a repeatable source of damage that could easily dispatch small, evasive threats.

The illustration was created by artist Jesper Ejsing, who captured the sparkmage in a moment of kinetic energy, reflecting the frantic and volatile nature of the Zendikar plane. The card became a significant staple in the Standard format of the era, particularly when combined with equipment like Basilisk Collar, creating a potent synergy that allowed players to neutralize almost any creature on the battlefield with ease.
