Where it came from
Curse of the Restless Dead was released in 2021 as part of the Undead Unleashed Commander deck associated with the Magic: The Gathering set Innistrad: Midnight Hunt. The card was designed to support a tribal zombie theme, reflecting the gothic horror aesthetic that characterizes the Innistrad plane. Mechanically, it functions as an enchantment that encourages a cycle of creature destruction and token generation, fitting into the 'aristocrats' playstyle popular in the Commander format.
The artwork was illustrated by Volkan Baga, whose work frequently appears in Magic: The Gathering to depict the darker, supernatural elements of the game. Baga’s design for this card utilizes a muted color palette and jagged, shadowy compositions to evoke a sense of creeping dread and eternal decay. Upon its release, the card was well-received by players seeking to optimize zombie-themed decks, appreciated for its synergy with sacrifice-focused strategies rather than its standalone power.
