Where it came from
Cursed Courtier was released as part of the Wilds of Eldraine expansion in September 2023, a set that revisited the high-fantasy, fairytale-inspired plane of Eldraine. The design draws heavily from the folklore archetype of the cursed nobleman, a trope common in stories of enchantment and moral transformation. It fits into the set's broader mechanical theme of 'Roles,' which represent magical enchantments that modify a creature's identity and capabilities on the battlefield.
The card features artwork by illustrator Johannes Voss, who utilized a moody, atmospheric aesthetic to capture the transition of the courtier from human to monster. The piece was well-received by players for its thematic cohesion and its utility in Limited formats, where the 'Cursed' role mechanic served as both a narrative device and a tactical challenge for deck builders.
