Where it came from
Custodi Soulbinders was released in 2016 as part of the Commander 2016 set for Magic: The Gathering. Designed specifically for the multiplayer Commander format, the card reflects the set's focus on complex political interactions and the 'monarch' mechanic, which encourages players to fight for control of the board state. It emerged from a period when Wizards of the Coast was expanding the reach of the Commander format through dedicated, preconstructed decks intended to introduce new mechanical innovations.
The artwork was created by illustrator Svetlin Velinov, who has contributed extensively to the visual language of the game. The design emphasizes the celestial and bureaucratic aesthetic of the Custodi, a faction within the lore of the plane of Fiora. By tasking players with managing life totals and creature growth, the card was received as a nuanced utility piece for white-aligned decks, balancing defensive capability with the potential for exponential scaling in longer matches.
