Provenance

Where it came from

Dark Banishing was originally introduced during the Mirage set in 1996 as a core removal spell for black decks, designed to provide a conditional answer to non-black creatures. By the time it was included in the Eighth Edition core set in 2003, it had become a hallmark of the black color identity, characterized by its ability to destroy creatures while bypassing those protected by color. The card exemplifies the mechanical philosophy of black mana: powerful, albeit restrictive, removal that maintains balance by being unable to target creatures that share its own dark alignment.

The Eighth Edition printing features artwork by Donato Giancola, who reimagined the classic spell with his signature sense of atmospheric dread and painterly detail. Moving away from the more visceral, illustrative style of the original Mirage version, Giancola’s rendition focuses on the unsettling, ethereal nature of the banishing effect. The design was received as a sophisticated update, fitting well within the cohesive, modern visual language Wizards of the Coast established for the game's shift to the white-bordered core set format in the early 2000s.
