Where it came from
The Dark Ascension Checklist card was released in early 2012 as part of the Magic: The Gathering set Dark Ascension. It was included in booster packs to serve as a placeholder for double-faced cards, which featured card backs different from the standard design. This allowed players to keep their deck lists uniform while using the double-faced cards in play by representing them with the checklist if they did not wish to use opaque card sleeves.
The design of the card, consistent with the set's gothic horror aesthetic, was intended to be utilitarian yet atmospheric. It was illustrated by the Wizards of the Coast internal design team to match the dark, macabre visual language of the Innistrad block. While functional in nature, it became a minor curiosity for collectors interested in the mechanical evolution of double-faced cards within the game's history.
