Where it came from
Dark Bargain was released as part of the 2018 expansion set Dominaria, a highly anticipated return to the game's original setting. Designed to evoke the lore of the Phyrexians and the complex moral trade-offs inherent in black mana magic, the card functions as an instant that allows players to look at the top two cards of their library, put them into their hand, and subsequently discard a card. This mechanic mirrors the flavor of a desperate or calculated exchange for power, a recurring theme within the game's color pie.
The artwork for this specific printing was illustrated by Johannes Voss, a long-time contributor to the game known for his expressive and atmospheric style. Voss sought to capture the tension of a forbidden pact, utilizing high-contrast lighting and dark, moody color palettes to emphasize the grim nature of the bargain being struck. Upon release, the card was received as a functional, mid-tier utility piece for limited formats and budget constructed decks, appreciated for its strategic flexibility in finding specific answers during a match.
