Darksteel Citadel

Darksteel Citadel was originally introduced in the 2004 Darksteel expansion for Magic: The Gathering, designed to represent the indestructible nature of the plane of Mirrodin. The card functions as an artifact land, a design choice intended to reward players for interacting with artifact-centric mechanics, effectively blurring the lines between structural terrain and playable machinery. Its inclusion in Commander 2018 provided a staple utility land for players, ensuring that even those who missed the original printing could access a card that serves as both a color-neutral mana source and a resilient permanent.

The card's iconic illustration by John Avon captures the monolithic, metallic aesthetic of the Mirrodin plane, emphasizing cold, sharp geometry and a sense of absolute permanence. By focusing on the interplay of light and reflection against the hardened darksteel material, the art reinforces the card's mechanical function of being indestructible. Upon its debut, the card was received as a versatile tool for various deck archetypes, particularly those that thrive on artifact synergy, and it remains a consistent fixture in Commander decks that require reliable, non-colored mana sources.
