Dawnray Archer was released in 2008 as part of the Shards of Alara expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The card was designed to represent the Bant shard, one of the five distinct planes that had been severed from the original world of Alara. In the game's lore, Bant is defined by its rigid hierarchy, emphasis on honor, and reliance on white-aligned magical energy, which is reflected in the creature's ability to manipulate mana based on its defensive alignment.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Christopher Moeller, who captured the stoic, armor-clad aesthetic characteristic of the Bant archers.
