Where it came from
Deadbridge Shaman was released in 2015 as part of the Magic Origins set, which served as a narrative bridge exploring the backstories of five iconic planeswalkers. The card reflects the grim, cycle-of-life aesthetic of the Golgari Swarm, a guild within the Ravnica setting. Mechanically, the card was designed to provide black-aligned decks with a creature that discouraged removal by forcing an opponent to discard a card upon its death, fitting the attrition-based gameplay style common to its guild.
The artwork for this card was created by Deruchenko Alexander, who utilized a dark, swampy palette to emphasize the Shaman's role in the Golgari's subterranean ecosystem. The design sought to capture the blend of decay and rebirth that defines the faction, depicting the figure amidst the overgrown ruins of Ravnica's undercity. Upon its release, the card was received as a solid, functional inclusion for limited formats, praised for its efficiency in trading resources with an opponent.
