Provenance

Where it came from

Deadshot Minotaur was released in 2009 as part of the Alara Reborn set for the Magic: The Gathering trading card game. This set was unique in the game's history as the first to consist entirely of multi-colored cards, representing the final fusion of the five shards of the plane of Alara. The card was designed to highlight the 'Jund' shard, a chaotic ecosystem where survival of the fittest is the governing law, fitting the Minotaur's aggressive combat ability.

The artwork was illustrated by Steve Prescott, a long-time contributor to the game known for his dynamic and creature-focused style. Prescott leaned into the brutal, predatory aesthetic of Jund, portraying the creature mid-attack to emphasize its ability to deal damage to opposing creatures. Upon release, the card was viewed primarily as a functional addition to Limited play environments, praised for its straightforward utility in punishing smaller creatures while maintaining the savage visual identity of the Alara setting.
