Provenance

Where it came from

Death-Hood Cobra was released in 2011 as part of the New Phyrexia set for Magic: The Gathering. The set depicts the final triumph of the Phyrexians, a biomechanical species obsessed with forced evolution and metal-flesh synthesis, over the plane of Mirrodin. The card represents the set's signature aesthetic of corrupted nature, where organic life is twisted into lethal, metallic forms.

The card was illustrated by Dave Kendall, a long-time contributor to the game known for his dark and visceral style. Kendall designed the creature to highlight the horrific integration of venomous biology and cold, industrial components. Upon its release, it was regarded as a quintessential example of the 'infect' mechanic's flavor, serving as a functional, aggressive creature that helped players reinforce the overwhelming, oppressive theme of the Phyrexian invasion.
