Death Pits of Rath

Death Pits of Rath was first introduced in the Stronghold expansion of Magic: The Gathering in 1998, designed by Mike Elliott as part of the game's exploration of enchantment-based combat modification. The card, which triggers a sacrifice effect whenever a creature is dealt damage, was intended to create high-tension board states that punish aggressive strategies, reflecting the grim, tactical atmosphere of the Rath block's storyline.

The Ninth Edition printing, released in 2005, features the artwork of Daren Bader. As a staple of the core set transition, this version updated the card to the modern card frame, which prioritized legibility and cleaner layout standards established during the eighth edition refresh. While the card is often viewed as a niche build-around piece in casual formats, its design remains a signature example of 'punisher' mechanics that force players to carefully weigh the cost of their combat decisions.
