Provenance

Where it came from

Death Pulse was originally printed in the 2002 Magic: The Gathering expansion Onslaught. The set was designed to emphasize the tribal theme, focusing on creature types like Zombies and Soldiers, with Death Pulse serving as a common black spell intended to provide utility in the Limited format by returning a creature to its owner's hand while distributing -1/-1 counters.

The card features artwork by Christopher Moeller, whose work defined much of the aesthetic for the Onslaught block. His illustration captures the visceral, necromantic theme of the set, grounding the card in the dark, swamp-heavy atmosphere of the Dominaria setting. In 2020, Wizards of the Coast introduced 'The List,' a curated selection of reprints from throughout the game's history that can be found in Set Boosters, and Death Pulse was included as part of this initiative to introduce legacy cards to a new generation of players.
