Provenance

Where it came from

Death Speakers was released in 1997 as part of the Fifth Edition of Magic: The Gathering. As the first core set to incorporate cards from multiple previous expansion sets rather than just Alpha and Beta, Fifth Edition was designed to consolidate the game's evolving mechanics and lore into a singular, cohesive experience for players during a period of significant growth for the trading card game.

The card features an illustration by Dan Frazier, a veteran artist whose work defined much of the early aesthetic of the game. His depiction of the death speakers captures the macabre, gothic tone common to early black-aligned cards. While the card is often remembered for its functional role in mid-nineties gameplay, its design remains a signature example of the dark, fantasy-inspired art style that helped establish the game's initial visual identity.
