Where it came from
Decree of Pain was originally printed in the 2003 Scourge expansion for Magic: The Gathering, designed as a powerful board wipe that rewards the caster with card advantage. This particular iteration is part of the Secret Lair series, a line of premium, alternate-art releases launched by Wizards of the Coast in 2019 to cater to collectors who appreciate thematic and artistic experimentation within the game's established lore.
The Secret Lair version of Decree of Pain features artwork by Yoji Shinkawa, the renowned artist celebrated for his work on the Metal Gear series. His signature ink-wash aesthetic, characterized by stark lines and minimalist color palettes, was chosen to evoke a sense of grim, cinematic gravitas. Upon its release, this art style was met with high praise from the player base, specifically for how the artist managed to capture the card's theme of overwhelming suffering and tactical devastation through a distinctively stylized lens.
