Provenance

Where it came from

Defang was released in 2012 as part of the Avacyn Restored set, the conclusion to the original Innistrad block for Magic: The Gathering. The set focused on the return of the archangel Avacyn and the restoration of hope to a gothic horror world plagued by supernatural threats. Mechanically, the card was designed to represent the tempering of powerful creatures, fitting the set's themes of protection and restorative justice against the encroaching darkness of the Eldrazi influence and the remnants of the werewolf curse.

The artwork was created by Steven Belledin, a frequent contributor to the game known for his expressive, textured style. In illustrating Defang, Belledin focused on the visceral imagery of magical restraint, depicting the removal of a creature's ability to bite or attack. The card serves as a common-rarity utility piece, reflecting the set's balanced design philosophy, which aimed to provide players with accessible tools to manage the high-power, high-toughness creatures prevalent in the Limited environment of the time.
