Lore

Why it matters

As a common card within its set, Defang serves as a practical tool for neutralizing persistent threats on the table. By removing a creature's ability to deal damage, it provides a cost-effective way to mitigate danger without needing to remove the permanent from play entirely.

Provenance

Where it came from

Defang was released in 2012 as part of the Avacyn Restored expansion for Magic: The Gathering. The set focused on the return of the archangel Avacyn to the gothic horror world of Innistrad, following a period where the plane was plagued by darkness and instability. Mechanically, the card serves as a common-rarity enchantment designed to neutralize creature threats, fitting the set's themes of protection and restorative justice.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Christopher Moeller, who captured the moment of an ethereal binding, visually reinforcing the enchantment’s function of stripping a creature of its abilities. Upon release, it was regarded as a functional limited-environment utility card, valued primarily for its role in stabilizing the board state during draft and sealed play within the Avacyn Restored limited format.
