Deflection

Deflection was first introduced in the Urza's Saga expansion in 1998, later appearing as a reprint in the Seventh Edition core set in 2001. As a blue instant spell, the card embodies the mechanics of redirection, allowing a player to change the target of a spell or ability that targets them. The Seventh Edition version features the clean, updated card frame introduced during that era, which was designed to improve readability and aesthetic consistency across the game's evolving library of cards.

The illustration for this iteration was created by artist Jeff Miracola. Miracola’s design focuses on the ethereal and kinetic nature of magic, visualizing the act of redirecting an incoming force through swirling energy. Within the context of the Seventh Edition, which sought to curate a selection of iconic and foundational cards for newer players, Deflection served as a staple for control-oriented strategies, emphasizing blue's philosophical role as a reactive and tactical color.
