As the third and final set in the Invasion block, it was designed to conclude the storyline centered on the invasion of the plane of Dominaria by the Phyrexians, a recurring antagonistic force in the game's lore. Mechanically, the card belongs to the 'Volver' cycle, a group of creatures known for their flexible casting costs and the ability to be 'kicked' to receive additional power and abilities, reflecting the set's focus on versatility and multicolored synergy.

The card’s illustration was created by artist Greg Staples, whose dark, evocative style was a staple of the era's fantasy aesthetic.
