What it does

Counter target spell. If the spell is countered this way, exile it with three time counters on it instead of putting it into its owner's graveyard. If it doesn't have suspend, it gains suspend. (At the beginning of its owner's upkeep, they remove a time counter. When the last is removed, they may play it without paying its mana cost. If it's a creature, it has haste.)

Provenance

Where it came from

Delay was originally printed as an uncommon card in the Planeshift expansion of Magic: The Gathering, released in 2001. It was designed as a blue counterspell that temporarily suspends a spell rather than permanently negating it, reflecting the set's thematic focus on time manipulation and the shifting landscape of the game's multiverse. The card was illustrated by Matt Cavotta, who utilized a distinct, surreal aesthetic to convey the mechanical concept of delaying an magical effect.

The version from The List represents a curated selection of reprints intended to introduce iconic or mechanically interesting cards from throughout the game's history to modern booster pack openings. By including Delay in The List, the designers highlighted the card's enduring utility in various formats, such as Commander, where its ability to interact with the stack while avoiding the permanent removal of threats remains a unique tactical asset.
