Delayed Blast Fireball

Delayed Blast Fireball was introduced in the Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate set, released in 2022. This set was designed to capture the flavor and mechanics of the Dungeons & Dragons Forgotten Realms campaign setting, translating iconic tabletop spells into the strategic framework of Magic: The Gathering. The card represents a classic D&D evocation spell, mechanically designed to reward players for delaying its impact, which simulates the buildup of magical energy before a detonation.

The card’s artwork was rendered by artist Marta Nael, who was commissioned to visualize the explosive potential of the spell within the high-fantasy aesthetic of the Baldur’s Gate expansion. The design intent focused on a 'forbearance' mechanic, allowing players to cast it for a lower cost and have it remain in exile, triggering later for greater effect. Upon its release, it was well-received by the Commander community for its versatility as both a board-clearing tool and a reactive threat, solidifying its place as a staple red card in multiplayer formats.
